Amergis Braille Transcriber in Alhambra, California

$30-$40 per hour DOE

Amergis Healthcare is looking for a Braillist, or Braille Instructional Aide, to work in public schools in the Whittier area in Los Angeles, CA. The purpose of this position is to assist teachers and other certificated staff with instructional and non-instructional activities for visually impaired students.

Position Details

  • Schedule: full time, up to 40 hours per week | this summer and next school

  • Pay: Weekly Pay, $30-$40

  • Setting: High School

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate a braillewriter and a computer using braille transcription software, electronic braille embossers, scanners, and related equipment.

  • Transcribe complex educational materials into braille, including literature, math, science, and foreign language content.

  • Create braille versions of books, class agendas, worksheets, and tests

  • Collaborate with teachers of the visually impaired (TVI) to transcribe and reproduce instructional materials in braille, large print, and audio formats. Work closely with teachers, students, and parents to address individualized needs and provide accessible materials.

  • Maintain accurate records of transcribed materials.

  • Review and proofread transcribed braille materials to ensure accuracy, consistency, and adherence to formatting guidelines set forth by the Braille Authority of North America (BANA).

Qualifications

  • Non-negotiable: Certificate from the Library of Congress in Literary Braille.

  • Bonus: Certificates in Nemeth Mathematics Braille and/or Music Braille.

  • Prior experience working in a school setting or working with school materials.

  • Broad familiarity with transcribing software such as BrailleBlaster, Duxbury, Braille 2000, GoodFeel, BrailleRAP.

  • Dependable and professional work ethic.

  • Strong communication skills.
