Amergis Santa Ynez-Mild/Mod Education Specialist in Buellton, California

The Special Education Teacher will work with children with mild to moderate disabilities. Specialized instruction and support may be provided in a general education or special education environment.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Properly supervise all students. All students are to be under assigned adult supervision at all times during school and during any school activity. Except in an emergency, no employee will leave an assigned group unsupervised.

  • Trains and assigns the work of instructional support staff and provides input into performance evaluation process.

  • Responsible for the development of Individual Education Plans, assistance in the evaluation process, and adherence to timelines.

  • Establishes an instructional learning environment for students by accommodating or modifying instructional activities to meet the students' individual goals and direct instruction. Direct instruction may be required in the areas of communication, daily living, socialization and transition.

  • Co-teach, collaborate and consult with general and special educators and related service providers to ensure that children receive a meaningful program and are educated in the Least Restrictive Environment.

  • Capacity to accept criticism calmly and with dignity, and without adopting a defensive attitude.

  • Participate in the total educational program of the school and exhibit interest in the student activities both inside and outside the classroom.

  • Available for consultation with students, parents, and other personnel before and after regular school hours.

  • Handle requests, misunderstandings, or difficulties through proper administrative channels.

  • Maintain order and discipline in the classroom as will best promote the welfare of the school.

  • Responsible for the safety, conduct, and instruction of students in their charge and for students outside of class hours as assigned.

  • Responsible for the progress of students for whom they instruct.

  • Maintain current knowledge of teaching methodology, subject matter, and contemporary educational approaches.

  • Maintain confidentiality and accurate records for reporting student progress (grades, attendance, IEP, progress reports, etc.).

  • Take proper care of school facilities and equipment to prevent abuse and misuse.

  • Attend regular and special meetings as required by administration.

  • Maintain communication and working relationship with members of the staff and district office staff.

  • Maintain communication and provide frequent feedback to students and parents regarding performance.

  • Dress professionally and in a manner that will not interfere with the educational environment.

  • Work cooperatively with the directors and administrators in the supervision and coordination of the respective programs.

  • Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by the site Principal(s) or Director of Special Education

Knowledge:

  • Possess a thorough understanding of, and an ability to relate to, youth.

  • Possess working knowledge of special education law and mandates established by the local and state plan.

  • Possess knowledge of and ability to apply principles and methods of developing an instructional and behavioral management system.

  • Capacity to make thoughtful decision based on facts, knowledge, and the insight, and the courage to stand by the results.\

  • Possess strong communication skills to collaborate with students, general education teachers, and parents when developing an appropriate Individual Education Plan.

  • Understanding of research based methods and strategies to assist children with disabilities.

  • Willingness to work with and physically control a student in a tantrum and restrain with assistance.

  • Possess knowledge and/or willingness to be trained in specialized health and safety care procedures and equipment; will be required, as the needs of students dictate, to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, first aid, physical restraint and specialized physical health care procedures.

  • In addition, the special education teacher is expected to have working knowledge of the general education curriculum and adapt or modify content accordingly to meet the needs of individual students.

  • Possess an ethical and professional attitude toward colleagues and the policies of the district.

  • Adhere to all Board of Education policies and abide by the provisions established within the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
