Amergis Braille Transcriber - LA County CA Area in Los Angeles, California

Braille Transcriber - LA County - Full School YR - End June 2025 - 40 Hrs Per Week

Under the supervision of the program instructor(s) and/orthe program administrator, the Braille Transcriber Instructional Assistant will support theinstruction and all other activities by Brailling materials for tutoring blindand visually impaired students on an individual and/or group basis. The BrailleInstructional Assistant will enable students to develop competencies and skillsto function in a successful and positive manner.

Hours: up to 40hrs a week

Location: In LA County

Position: - Braille Transcriber

Time frame: 24-25 SY and potentially some hours over the summer.

Billable hours: up to 40 hours/week

Working with multiple students

Grade level of student(s): Age 14-18

Software/braille typewriter & the materials needed for the position: District has the equipment and materials.

Certification needed: Certificate from the Library of Congress in Literary Braille. Ideal to have additional certificates in Nemeth Mathematics Braille and Music Braille.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates effective communication though verbal andwritten instruction

  • Transcribes written material accurately into literaryBraille, tactile, and large print material

  • Tutors students in correct Braille usage, providesone-to-one and group instruction to students

  • Relays technical needs for the blind and visually impairedto program instructor(s) and/or program administrator needed for the student tosucceed

  • Assists in establishing and maintaining a learningenvironment essential to the Learning goals and curriculum outcomes designed bythe program instructor

  • Assists in evaluating and specifying the direction ofinstruction to Amergisize the student's learning potential

  • Accurately maintains and relays data on student progress asapplicable

  • Follows behavioral management strategies and techniquesidentified by the program instructor

  • Assists in organizing and preparing instructional materials

  • Attends various trainings necessary to understand currentevidenced-based guidelines and trending issues relating to the visuallyimpaired as required by state or contract

  • Communicates effectively with students, staff, and parents

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements:

  • Certification as a Literary Braille Transcriber orProofreader is preferred

  • Minimum six months of experience performing basic Brailletranscription; OR satisfactory completion of a course in braille transcriptionfrom the National Federation of the Blind

  • Must be able use computer notation and other electronicequipment used by the blind and visually impaired

  • Must have knowledge and skill related to embossing tools,media, and understand the concepts to be presented when preparing tactilematerials

  • Must be flexible, cooperative, and be able to maintain HIPPA

  • Complies with all relevant professional standards ofpractice

  • Participation and completion of Amergis’ Competency programwhen applicable

  • Current CPR if applicable

  • TB Questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable

  • Current Health certificate (per contract or stateregulation)

  • Must meet all federal, state and local requirements

  • Successful completion of new hire training as applicable tojob site

  • Understand patient confidentiality and HIPAArequirements

  • Ability to effectively elicit/provide information to andfrom appropriate individuals (including, but not limited to, supervisors,co-workers, clients) via strong communication skills; proficiency in theEnglish language is required

  • Computer proficiency required

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
